What happens to a business when its owner leaves? A sale, an internal transfer, a restructuring and an orderly wind-down can lead to very different outcomes for the owner, the business and the people who depend on it.

A county-by-county research project

This research examines the 17 SI Now counties in Southern Illinois. It brings together business and employment statistics, selected transition histories, manufacturing and agriculture context, and conditions that could make continuity harder.

Transferability concerns whether the necessary capabilities and value persist through a specified change. A completed transaction is at least a partial success. A healthy transfer also requires acceptable owner terms and durable business continuity.

Evidence and projections have different jobs

The report separates dated observations, conditional warnings and numerical planning illustrations. The five- and ten-year scenarios are assumption-based. They do not establish county sale totals, failure rates or healthy-transfer percentages.

Employer locations, firms, owners, nonemployers and farms remain separate. Employee bands are not revenue bands, and a source publication date does not make older observations current.
